Émile Joseph Benoit was of French and Acadian heritage. He was born in 1913 in the community of Black Duck Brook on the Port-au-Port Peninsula. Benoit left school at an early age to support his family as a fisherman but his musical talent was always close and hand and required no formal training. First learning to play on homemade fiddles, Benoit received his first real fiddle at the age of twelve. For much of his life, he played for free at local weddings and celebrations but in 1973, at the age of 60, Benoit won second place in a violin contest in Stephenville. His talent began to be known outside his close knit community, and he was soon sought after to perform at folk festivals around the world. Benoit released three albums, influenced many well-known Newfoundland and Labrador musicians, composed an estimated 200 songs, and is recognized for bringing Newfoundland and Labrador’s francophone culture and community to the international stage. Émile Benoit died in 1992.

Émile Joseph Benoit était d’origine française et acadienne. Il est né en 1913 à l’Anse-à-Canards, une collectivité de la péninsule de Port-au-Port. M. Benoit quitte très tôt l’école pour devenir pêcheur et aider sa famille. Pourtant il ne s’est jamais trop éloigné de son talent musical. Ayant d’abord appris à jouer sur des violons fabriqués à la maison, M. Benoit reçoit son premier véritable violon à l’âge de 12 ans. Durant presque toute sa vie, il joue gratuitement lors de mariages et de fêtes dans sa collectivité, mais en 1973, à l’âge de 60 ans, M. Benoit gagne le deuxième prix lors d’un concours de violon à Stephenville. Son talent commence ensuite à être découvert au-delà des liens serrés de sa collectivité et on le sollicite souvent pour des festivals folkloriques dans le monde entier. M. Benoit a lancé trois albums, influencé de nombreux musiciens de renom de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador et composé quelque 200 chansons. M. Benoit est reconnu pour avoir fait connaître la culture et la communauté francophones de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador sur la scène internationale. Émile Benoit est décédé en 1992.
