Notes
Francis King’s Fish Store is a wooden, gable-roofed fisheries building located at the water’s edge in Change Islands, NL. The store was built in the late 1800s by Jessie Taylor, who operated his family fishery from the store for about 50 years. The next owner was Captain Fred Chaffey, who bought the property that housed the stage. Francis King bought the stage in the 1970s and, with the help of his crew, floated the stage to its current location in Ascal’s Cove, Change Islands. Francis operated his fishing business out of the stage until his retiremenet in 1996, processing a variety of fish, including lump, herring, lobster and cod. Francis King applied for the Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program (FHPP) in 2007. At that time the old store was in need of new clapboard, a new roof and the structure needed a fresh coat of paint. Mr. King took on the project, doing what was necessary to save his historic building. He replaced the clapboard, added new shingles to the roof and repaired/restored the window and doors. The overall structure was given a coat of traditional red paint with white trim. The structure stands out on the wonderful, Change Islands landscape now that it is restored. Mr. King is well pleased to see the job done.
