Notes
Hyde’s Shed is a wooden, gable-roofed fishing shed located on a rocky outcrop in Change Islands, NL. The building was constructed between the late 1800s and early 1900s, though the original owner is unknown. The second owner was Leander Morgan, who used the building for general storage of fishing gear, and for storing dried fish. The building displays properties of traditional fishing stores, including its narrow wooden clapboard, wide plank door and wooden windows with multi-panes. Owner Brian Hyde applied to the Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program (FHPP) in 2006 with the intention of restoring the then decaying building. The siding and walkway were in need of repair, while the roof was most damaged and required new roof shingles, eaves and flashing. Mr. Hyde began his restoration project during the summer of 2006. All old clapboard was stripped and all rough boards were re-nailed, while the siding was replaced and painted. The facings were replaced; windows repaired and felt strips were replaced. The roof was repaired and given new shingles. Mr. Hyde found that, while he encountered no problems with the restoration project, the scaffolding was time-consuming as the building was very high. The newly restored shed, one of few of this style in the north end of the harbour, was given a new coat of paint and stands out beautifully on the Change Islands landscape.
