Notes
John Keats Fishing Shed, built sometime in the 1800s, is a wooden fisheries building located on Barr’d Islands, Fogo Island. It was built by Richard Fenamore’s father, and first used by him before being sold to John Keats. Mr. Keats applied to the Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program (FHPP) in 2007 to aid in the restoration of this historic building. Primarily used for fishing purposes such as mending nets, and making and repairing lobster pots and salmon nets, this building was also a one-time boat building site in the 1970s. The boat has been taken to Joe Batt’s Arm under new ownership. At the time of application the building was in need of new wooden clapboard, new doors, a new roof and paint. Mr. Keats, with the help of friends, replaced sections of rotten sill and corner uprights while the roof was re-sheathed and the clapboard replaced. A new door was constructed and installed. The community has responded very positively to the restoration, saying it has a “nice look” and some artifacts have been put inside for visitors to view. Mr. Keats says of the project, “I feel completely happy about the upgrade and present look of the building. Instead of tearing down this building it now stands as a reminder of our past.”
