Notes
Kevin Greene’s Store was built around 1880 by Anthony Ryan, who carried on a fish business for James Ryan and Company of Bonavista. A retail operation was housed in the large, two storey building. The Greene family purchased the store in 1918 and used it for storing dried cod and fishing supplies. Kevin Greene’s Stage, located on a small island and separated from the store by a short stretch of water, was built in the 1960s. Materials used in the construction of the stage were salvaged from another stage that had been torn down, including the floor from an old liver factory operated by the Ryans. With assistance from the Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program, the Tilting Recreational and Cultural Society restored Kevin Greene’s Store and Stage, protecting the last of the late nineteenth century mercantile buildings in the community. Four cribbing frames had to be built to order to reconnect the two buildings. Getting ballast from the shore to the frames proved difficult and punts were eventually used to transport the rocks used for ballast. The laying of the bridge between the buildings followed the completion of the new cribbing, and new shores and foundation supports were also installed. The store was newly shingled, repairs were made to its eaves, corner boards and trims and local wooden clapboard was installed on its exterior. The stage needed only minor repairs and both structures received a new coat of paint in red and dory buff hues.
