Heritage Value

The Mary Boland House was designated a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2003 because of its aesthetic value. The Mary Boland House has aesthetic value as it is one of a few remaining examples of saltbox construction in the Southern Shore region. This form of vernacular construction, featuring a two-room ground floor plan with a central chimney and back linhay, was common among first generation settlers in Calvert, and surrounding communities, and was an accepted form of early housing throughout Newfoundland. Built in the early twentieth century, this well preserved house stands as a testament to the permanence and adaptability of this form through generations.
