Notes
This stage has been in the Porter family since the early 1900s, when it was built by William John Porter (1872-1956). William John gave the stage to his son Fred Porter (1902-1979) who in turn gave it James Porter (1944-2000) in the mid 1970s. James Porter’s wife Edna gave the stage to Rex Porter in 2008. The Porter family operated a large fishing enterprise on the north end of Change Islands throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Over the past century the stage was used by all the preceding owners for processing all commercial fish species harvested in the area, especially cod, salmon, herring and seals. The cod were split and salted in earlier years. In later years the fish were only gutted and then sold directly to a fish plant. The stage was moved from its original location in Northern Tickle to its present location in Main Tickle by James Porter in the late 1970s.
