Notes
This large, 2 storey traditional inshore premises was used in the cod, herring, salmon, lobster, seal, bait and Labrador fisheries and is probably one of the oldest stages on Change Islands. The building was originally constructed by William Wells with a slight tilt to let the pickle run out of the fish that were stored inside. William Wells had two schooners, the L.C. Norman and the Silver Lake. Heber LeDrew was the second owner of the stage. Heber was born in Brigus in 1908 and came to Change Islands in 1917 to live with William LeDrew, later working as a labourer on his guardian’s schooner when he was 11. The third owners were Edwin LeDrew and Fredrick Donald LeDrew (deceased) of Change Islands. It was actively used by owner Edwin LeDrew and son, Kevin until 2007. The building is centrally located in a small cove on the Main Tickle of Change Islands, on the northeast side of the North Island, about 500 feet west of the causeway next to Walter Torraville’s fishing stage and ferry terminal. It is clearly visible by all who travel between the two Islands by way of the E.S. Spencer causeway/bridge.
