Notes
Located in Barr’d Islands, Winston C. Combden’s Stage is a modified, one-storey wooden fishing stage which was originally built from a two-storey home. As a two-storey, it was used for dry salt cod storage. As is usual with many Newfoundland outbuildings, this one was also used for various purposes, including its use for school concerts. Owner Winston Combden uses it for mending and making nets and other fishing gear. Built in 1935 by Mr. Combden’s father and his brother, the stage is sheathed in wooden clapboard and is supported by wooden shores. Mr. Combden applied to the Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program (FHPP) in 2007 to help restore his fisheries building. The low-pitch gable roof was re-covered with shingles and new clapboard was installed. The foundation was strengthened with new shores and the entire structure was given a coat of paint. The community has responded positively to the restoration, saying that it adds to the beauty of the town. Mr. Combden is quite pleased with the results, saying it gives him “pride of ownership.”
