Heritage Value

The Buckingham Property was designated a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1992 for its aesthetic and historic value. The Buckingham Property has aesthetic value as it is an excellent example of the Arts and Crafts style of architecture that was used heavily in Corner Brook by architect Andrew Cobb. A well preserved, largely unaltered “Type 4rr” house, it is the most common and thus a good representation of the seven house styles that were used in Corner Brook during this period. Both the interior and exterior are very well preserved, including original features integral to the Arts and Crafts style such as exterior wood shingles and the built-in hutch on the interior. The location of the Buckingham Property is aesthetically important because it is a part of a larger complex of houses and buildings built by the mill in Corner Brook. The context of this house within the larger scheme of the other buildings is important. The Buckingham Property also has aesthetic value for its association with architect Andrew Cobb. Halifax born Cobb was commissioned by the Newfoundland Pulp and Paper Company to design the town of Corner Brook in 1923. Cobb had an immense impact on Corner Brook, drawing on inspiration from the British models of the 1910s including the Arts and Crafts style of architecture and with the assistance of planner Thomas Adams, the Garden City movement. The Buckingham Property is one of the first houses Cobb built and it remains one of the most well preserved examples of an original house in the Townsite. The Buckingham Property has historic value as a reminder of the influence of industry in the City of Corner Brook. Essentially a factory town, the history of Corner Brook has been largely shaped by the presence of the pulp and paper mill in the town. One of the ways in which Corner Brook has been shaped was through the building of houses for its employees. The Townsite, where the Buckingham Property is located is an entire area of Corner Brook that was built by the mill. Buckingham Property is a good early example of this development.
