Heritage Value
Compton House has been designated a Municipal Heritage Structure by the City of St. John’s for its aesthetic and historical values.
Compton House is aesthetically valuable because it is a fine example of Queen Anne Revival design. It has two storey bow windows, decorative wood shingles, double dormers and decorative pediments and columns. The covered opened porch features a sun design and a decorated pediment with columns, as well as the original entrance with sidelights.
Compton House is historically valuable because of its association with one of its owners C.A. Pippy, who was founder of Newfoundland Tractors Limited. In the 1960s, he gave a million dollars to the provincial government to purchase land to develop a large park within the city limits. C.A. Pippy Park was named in his honor.
