Notes
The two-storey store on this site was once a home owned by Clarence Greene. In 1929 a huge tidal surge destroyed many of the fishing structures in this area of Tilting known as Greene’s Point. A three-storey twine store that had once been here and belonged to Patrick Greene and sons was completely destroyed by the huge waves. The store contained everything that Paddy needed to take part in the fishery the next summer, along with an entire winter’s diet for Paddy’s family of 14. As waves pounded the store, Paddy’s son Michael, who was only 11 years old, offered to jump to the upper store window and try to secure some of the fishing supplies. He was told to stand back, but he ran and jumped towards the upper store door and managed to hold on long enough to gain entry to the store loft. Michael grabbed a piece of rope that was around the leader of a cod trap and threw the rope to men on land. They hauled the entire trap through the store door. Michael managed to throw most of his father’s trawls, nets, twine and other fishing supplies to the men. Then he jumped into the arms of the fishermen who were waiting below. The winter’s diet was lost to the raging seas but Michael had made it possible for his family to prosecute the inshore fishery the following summer. Paddy purchased an old house belonging to Clarence Greene and had it towed to its present location to replace the store that had been washed away in the storm.
