Heritage Value

Pinsent’s Lane has been designated a municipal heritage site by the Town of New Perlican because of its cultural and aesthetic value.

Pinsent’s Lane has cultural value for generations of New Perlican residents who have a shared recollection of its cultural use. Pinsent’s Lane was used primarily as a horse and cart path leading from the main road to the shoreline.  Historically, Pinsent’s Lane was bordered by gardens on both sides. On one side of Pinsent’s Lane were two gardens owned by brothers Richard and William Hobbs. On the other side of the Lane were two gardens owned by the Pinsents.  The Lane led to John George’s house and land and to the premises of Captain Jacob Pinsent, who had bought gardens along the Lane from the Snook family. At the time of purchase in the 1920s, the deed showed the Lane and its width. When Captain Pinsent was engaged in the Labrador fishing trade, his premises included a large stage, fish flakes and a sizeable two storey building. The large building was used to repair sails, store salt fish and to keep merchandise when he later became involved in the coastal commercial service.  Several private stages were also located at the end of Pinsent’s Lane and their owners would use the Lane to access the main road. The Society of United Fishermen also accessed the Lane while they were using Jacob Pinsent’s twine store for a meeting place while constructing their own building.

Pinsent’s Lane has aesthetic value as a known landmark in the community. It also serves as a physical reminder of a time when small lanes provided access to community spaces. Located along the main road running through the community, it is still an open thoroughfare to the harbour – although the area has changed somewhat and the land is owned by various residents. A pergola built by former land owner Bill Power Junior defines the area. Power also installed two storyboards just beyond the pergola. The shared recollection of the Lane’s use ensures that it will continue to be an important part of the community’s cultural landscape.
