Heritage Value

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Property was designated a Registered Heritage Structure by the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador in 2008 for its historic, aesthetic and cultural value. St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Property has historic value because of its age. Built in 1915 it is the third church erected on the site. It is also historically valuable because the stained glass windows in the building stand as an historical record of the Anglican community of Fogo Island West. Many of the stained glass windows were donated by parishioners in memory of deceased members, including war dead, as recorded by text incorporated into the design of the windows. These include a feature window with an image of St. Andrew, the church’s namesake, which is located in the chancel end. St. Andrew’s Church has aesthetic value in many ways. Built in the Gothic Revival style of architecture, the wooden church takes on a vernacular interpretation of the style. Elements of this style include the steep pitch gable roof which, when combined with the verticalism of the structure, draw the eye upward. Other elements of interest include the arched windows with tracery, quatrefoil windows, a clerestory, and many decorative elements such as finials, louvered windows, the bell tower and steeple. This church is massive and makes a striking visual impact on the landscape. St. Andrew’s Church has cultural value to the community in many ways. It is a visual landmark; its large size, tall bell tower and large steeple making it visible from many areas in the town. The associated cemetery is also of cultural significance because it serves as a record of former parishioners and community members, many of whom were well-known outside the town, as well as within Fogo. Some gravemarkers date to the mid-1700s and reveal Fogo’s trade relationship with the United Kingdom from very early times. The Anglican religion was the first and historically prevailing denomination in the Town of Fogo and St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Property sits in a prominent and central location.
