Notes
Walter Torraville’s Store was originally used as a warehouse by Torraville, who owned a retail store in the late 1800s. It was sold to Fred Chaffey who later operated a retail business on Change Islands until the mid 1950s. The Store was then bought by Leslie Hoffe, who used it as a place to make, mend and store fishing gear.
Jerry Hoffe’s Store was built around 1890, and was used by the Hoffe family for storing dry cod before it was shipped to fish merchants. It was later bought by Leslie Hoffe.
Both stores were restored with Fisheries Heritage Preservation Program funding support in 2007. This included roof and eaves repairs, replacing and staining sheathing, and replacing some of the shores in the foundations. The owner reports getting “lots of compliments on the restoration,” and that “tourists ask how old the stores are and who keeps them in such good repair.”
