Description

Thomas Bailey Store may be one of only two original stores in New Bonaventure. The current owners have two original handwritten deeds. One is date December 5, 1874, and it transfers the title of the land from James Ivany to William Ivany. This was land that had been willed to James from his father, Matthew Ivany. The second deed, dated November 10, 1891, transfers the title for the house and land from James Ivany to Thomas Bailey. This store is the only remaining part of a fishing room that was built by the Bailey family. Thomas Bailey built the room around the turn of the 20th century. He would have prosecuted the fishery from these premises and then passed them on to his grandson Ross Clarke, who he had raised as his son. Mr. Clarke and his wife continued to live and work from this property until their deaths in March 2001.
